Japan to bet on Las Vegas-style casinos

A group of casino supporters wants to make Japan’s gambling laws more flexible because they think the country is losing a big opportunity and potential profits. Other Asian countries, like South Korea and China, have lifted their ban on gambling, which has increased tourism and improved their economies.

"The idea isn't just to build casinos but to develop huge entertainment complexes that include shops, restaurants and theatres to give tourists and business people something to do, apart from seeing all of the usual historical and cultural sites, of course", Takayuki Aoki, chief political aide to a Liberal Democratic party, said.

When asked about the fear that super-casinos could increase gambling addictions and crime, Mr Aoki explained that they plan to build very few casinos at first and give them a trial period to see what problems, if any, arise.

If the bill is approved, it will take five years to train enough croupiers to meet the needs of the super-casinos.
